For years, I bought each of my children a new ornament every year. We dated the back and they each had their own box in which these ornaments were stored. Every year a flood of memories came as they remembered the when and why of each. Three of my boys are out of the home. One has the box at his box, awarded with marriage, the other two's boxes are in storage in the basement. My daughter is the only one who is putting her ornaments on the tree now. Of course we have ornaments with a history of their own, like the little bird house that an old friend gave me after I was first married, or the styrofoam crown and cross made by residents in the nursing home I worked in long ago. We have started a new tradition though, a new angel every year. After all, the angels announced the birth of Christ, so it seems fitting. And an entire choirs' worth seems more so...
Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
